Managing Director
Weber Shandwick
Campbell has spent some 20 years in Japan moving back and forth across the media landscape. Commencing his career in PR and marketing, he subsequently spent almost 10 years as a writer and editor at The Mainichi, one of Japan’s “big three” newspapers, followed by an award-winning stint at Omnicom’s brand and media agencies in Tokyo.
He has extensive experience of digital strategy and online media, invaluable skills he acquired as Business Director for PHD and OMD in Japan. His decade at the newspaper and several years of freelancing for Time and Fortune magazines taught him the golden principles of storytelling.
Campbell joined Weber Shandwick in 2014 to spearhead the Japan office’s digital and creative offerings. He built and championed the company’s capabilities beyond traditional PR into influencer marketing, paid amplification and content marketing, demonstrating how to best leverage technology and harness the power of owned and social media to achieve business goals.
After serving as EVP of Client Experience, during which time he proselytized the need for creative and digital to be embedded in all our work, Campbell was appointed Managing Director of Weber Shandwick Japan in 2021.
He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Marketing & PR Committee at the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan, and was formerly Chair of the PR Committee at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan.
Campbell lectures on Communications at schools and universities across Japan, and serves as a juror for industry award shows, including the PRWeek Awards, the Effies, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Communicative Public Relations Award.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Deakin University and a Certificate in Digital Marketing from Google Squared Online. Campbell describes himself as a fluent Japanese listener.
